Umu Medicinal

Umu Medicinal

The adventure begins in the community of Runashitu, where you will stay with a Kichwa family. You will learn about their culture, language, customs and medicinal wisdom. Accompanied by your host, you will take a walk through the forest to learn about its rich variety of medicinal plants and the ways in which the Kichwa ancestors used them as preventatives and curative medicine. For example, the leaves, bark and roots of different forest species are used to prevent many ailments and diseases such as:  inflammation, diabetes, snake bites, colds, superficial cuts and viruses. Our people’s knowledge of ancient medicine has been passed on from generation to generation.
After the walk, we will return home for an exquisite traditional lunch made with local freshwater fish and then you will have time to relax. Afterwards, we will prepare a traditional drink of your choice: guayusa or hierbaluisa. Also, we will demonstrate the preparation of a curative drink for cold viruses.

You can enjoy a cleansing bath with mountain leaf water, a very traditional and spiritual act that embodies the belief in the power and healing properties of natural medicine.

At night, a light dinner will be served and you can enjoy listening to the sounds of nocturnal wildlife.

In the morning, after a delicious Amazonian breakfast, we will go to Umu Lake. After a short walk, we will arrive at the pier where you can enjoy a great view. Here, you can see aquatic species such as paiche and pacu. In our museum, you can learn about our Kichwa culture. This includes the production of a traditional cassava drink called chicha, the variety of fabrics and crafts made with forest products and you can enjoy the rhythm of indigenous dance. Here, a delicious and unique traditional dish will be served made with fish and other local ingredients.
